Akumanoshirushi's CARRY-IN-PROJECT creates a huge structure that can barely fit into the exhibition space and will carry it in with the help of participants. It is an unexpectedly festive and dramatic event despite the simplicity of the act. This signature project has been executed at various venues in Japan as well as overseas. As fearless as CARRY-IN-PROJECT, the company produces a performing arts piece that aims to deconstruct the structure of theater and its unspoken assumptions. The versatility of the company members, some coming from architectural backgrounds and others from fashion, makes such an attempt possible. Akumanoshirushi is a unique artist collective, led by Noriyuki Kiguchi.
Their new theater piece Mon Père, Giacometti is a story about a father who used to be a painter and his son who works in performing arts. Father, starting to show signs of dementia, confuses himself with Giacometti, a great artist who he admired when he was young and his son with Isaku Yanaihara, a Japanese scholar. Playing along with his father's delusion, the son ends up posing for the father for a whole day, which is the beginning of their strange theatrical life. The casting, played by Kiguchi and his own father, adds another dimension to the mixture of fiction and reality. Offering more than a simple autobiographical aspect, is it an absurd comedy or cynical tragedy?
